In 2020, wind and solar power reached a record high, accounting for 30% of the UK’s electricity. The increasing number of onshore and offshore wind farms played a prominent part in this new achievement.
The heavy investment into the sector follows the 2018 announcement to phase out all unabated coal-fired power stations by 2025 and to drive growth of renewable, clean power sources to reach the target of zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
At present, wind power is the most productive greenhouse technology, contributing over 24% of the UK’s electricity in 2020. B&S Group is proud to be working alongside some of the UK’s leading power providers on sizeable onshore projects across the country, providing innovative integrated power solutions that contribute to the greater goal.
Most recently, on Easter Monday, the electricity system was the greenest it had ever been, with almost 80% of Britain’s power generated by low-carbon energy sources. The windy yet sunny weather was a contributing factor, alongside the low demand for power as people remained local during lockdown and factories were closed for the holiday.
